Trixino: How online slots work

Every online slot is a random number generator wrapped in a theme. Once you understand the RNG, the paytable and the main features, any slot becomes much easier to read.

The short answer

An online slot uses a random number generator (RNG) to decide the result of each spin the moment you press the button. The reels you see only display that result. Wins come from matching symbols on paylines or "ways", and the game's return to player (RTP) and volatility describe how much it pays back over time and how unevenly.

The random number generator

The RNG constantly generates numbers. When you spin, the current number is mapped to a reel position for each reel. Each spin is independent of the last: a slot is never "due" a win, and it does not run hot or cold. In regulated markets, RNGs are tested by independent labs before games go live.

Reels, rows and ways to win

Classic slots have three reels; most modern video slots have five reels and three or four rows. Winning combinations are counted in one of these ways:

Parts of a typical online slot screen
How slots count wins
SystemHow it works
PaylinesFixed lines across the reels; matching symbols must land on an active line, usually from the left
Ways to winMatching symbols on adjacent reels from the left count in any row position (for example 243 or 1,024 ways)
Cluster paysGroups of touching symbols pay, often with symbols dropping into place after a win
Variable reelsThe number of symbols per reel changes each spin, giving a changing number of ways

Symbols and features

  • Wilds substitute for other symbols to complete wins.
  • Scatters pay anywhere on the screen and often trigger free spins.
  • Free spins rounds may add multipliers, extra wilds or sticky symbols.
  • Multipliers increase a win by a set factor.
  • Bonus games are mini-games inside the slot with their own payouts.
  • Jackpots can be fixed or progressive; a progressive jackpot grows with a share of every bet.
  • In the UK, autoplay and fast-play features are banned, and other countries have their own restrictions.

The paytable is your manual

Open the info or help screen before you play. It shows what each symbol pays, how features trigger, the maximum win and, in many regulated markets, the RTP. Many slots are released in several RTP versions, so the figure in the help screen of the game you are actually playing is the one that counts.

RTP and volatility

RTP is the share of all stakes a slot is designed to return over a very large number of spins; a 96% RTP game keeps 4% on average. Volatility describes how wins are spread: low-volatility slots pay small amounts often, high-volatility slots pay rarely but can pay big. Read RTP explained and slot volatility explained.

UK rules for online slots

Slots offered by UKGC-licensed casinos follow extra design rules:

  • Maximum stake of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24
  • No autoplay, and at least 2.5 seconds between spins
  • No features that speed up play or stop the reels early
  • No sounds or animations that present a loss as a win
  • Your net position and time played must be shown during a session

Myths to ignore

  • Timing your spins does not change the result.
  • Changing your stake does not make a win more likely.
  • A slot that has not paid for a while is not "due".
  • Demo mode and real-money mode of the same game use the same rules, but check that the RTP version is the same.

Play within your limits

Slots are fast. Hundreds of spins an hour add up, so set a budget and a time limit, and take breaks. See our responsible gambling page for tools and free help, or browse a lobby overview in the casino games overview.

In the UK, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free, confidential and open 24/7, and GAMSTOP lets you self-exclude from all UK-licensed gambling sites at once.

Frequently asked questions

Can you predict when a slot will pay out?

No. Each spin is decided by the random number generator independently of previous spins. Patterns, timing and stake changes do not affect the outcome.

What is a good RTP for a slot?

Many online slots have an RTP of around 94% to 97%. A higher RTP means a lower house edge over the long run, but it does not guarantee better results in a single session.

What is the difference between paylines and ways to win?

Paylines are fixed patterns across the reels. Ways-to-win slots pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels in any row, which creates many more combinations.
